The Bulgarian royal family is a constitutional monarchy, but kingship was abolished in 1946 by a referendum that resulted in the establishment of the Bulgarian People's Republic. The last monarch to reign in Bulgaria was Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, or King Simeon II, who was born in Sofia in 1937. He assumed the throne in 1943 after the death of his father, Boris III, but his reign was cut short by the communist takeover in 1946. Simeon II went into exile in Spain, where he lived for over 50 years, before returning to Bulgaria in 1996. He founded the political party National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) and served as the Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 2001 to 2005. The Bulgarian royal family includes his wife, Queen Margarita, and their five children. However, the Bulgarian royal family does not have any official role or constitutional powers.
